The Top Reasons Why You Should Visit Spain

*This post originally appeared on Ryan Hemphill.

Last month the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism report ranked Spain as the best destination for tourists. This is the second time that Spain has appeared at the top of the list. According to Caroline McGuire, a writer at The Sun, the report looks at a country’s “business environment, safety and security, health and hygiene, price competitiveness, international openness, tourist service, transport infrastructure and natural resources” (Source). Visiting Spain has become so popular that the mayor of Barcelona recently announced new taxes to actually deter tourism. Yet it’s unlikely that higher prices will result in a drop in tourism. Keep reading to learn why Spain is such a popular travel destination.

Weather

Spain has some of the best weather in Europe. When you visit expect lots of sunshine. Even during fall and winter, you’re likely to get a lot of sunshine and very little rain.

Beaches

Not only do you get wonderful weather—you also get fantastic beaches where you can relax and enjoy all of that sunshine. Spain routinely appears at the top of lists that rank countries that have the best beaches. Many of the country’s beaches have been awarded Blue Flags. The award is given out to beaches that meet certain environmental standards.

Food

When it comes to food, the dishes in Spain will leave your taste buds begging for more. Paella is one of the country’s most popular dishes. The most well-known version is Valencian paella which usually includes rice, chicken, and a variety of vegetables. If you visit Segovia be prepared to eat a lot of pig, particularly Cochinillo Asado. Tortilla Española is a dish that you’ll find all over the country. You can learn more about the Spanish omelet here.

Cities

Spain has many world-class cities filled with breathtaking architecture, local charm, and history. Here are three of the most popular:

  • Madrid – Spain’s capital city is one of the largest cities in Europe. It’s also one of Europe’s most beautiful cities. Art lovers will enjoy the museum options, and partygoers will enjoy the nightlife options. The city’s climate encourages people to get outside and enjoy the weather while sitting at a cafe or in a park.
  • Barcelona – Like I mentioned above, Barcelona is becoming so popular that city leaders want fewer tourists to visit. Barcelona sits on the coastline, so it features some wonderful beaches. If you like history you’ll be amazed at what Barcelona has to offer. You’ll also find some of Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso’s most famous paintings hanging in the city’s museums.
  • Segovia – Segovia’s old city is a World Heritage Site. The Aqueduct of Segovia is one of the city’s most famous historical sites. The aqueduct was built by the Romans during the first or second century CE. Take a look at this site to learn more about the structure. In addition to its historical sites, the town has many sculptures and parks.
